Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
History of Bangalore: Bangalore is the capital city of the state of Karnataka. Bangalore, as a city, was founded by Kempe Gowda 1, who built a mud fort at the site in 1537. But the earliest evidence for the existence of a place called Bangalore dates back to 890.
Kempe Gowda 1 (1510 to 1570), Modern Bangalore was founded by a feudatory of the Vijayanagara Empire, who built a mud fort in the year 1537. Kempe Gowda also referred to the new town as his "gandu bhoomi" or "Land of Heroes". Their intersection formed Doddapete square — the heart of then Bangalore., (Benda means boiled, Kaalu means beans and Ooru means town/city, which effectively translates to “City of boiled beans”). It was this part of the forest which went on to develop over time and its name “Benda Kaalu Ooru” or “Bendakaalooru” was shortened to “Bengaluru” and anglicized into “Bangalore”.

When the Britishers decided to launch the survey, the first baseline was drawn between Krishnarajapuram and Agara.

Bengaluru featured in the project because Lambton wanted to map the terrain between Chennai and Mangaluru, whose control was, at the time, wrested from Tipu Sultan by the British after the Third Anglo-Mysore war.

“While the end points of this baseline of Lambton have been destroyed, the subsequent baseline measured in 1868 exists to this day in the city and these historical points remain While the south-west endpoint at the Kempegowda Tower near Mehkri Circle has a stone plaque announcing itself, the north-east end point, a little on Hennur-Bagalur Road, What ought to be a place of pilgrimage for every science and engineering student.
